287 Ads Seen a Day

We see 287 of themHow many pieces of advertising is the average person exposed to each day?  It isn’t an exact science and the answer you receive will be different depending on who you ask or what study you read.  It has become popular as of late to say the number is somewhere between three thousand and six thousand but if you do the math it doesn’t add up, (check out some of the smaller and larger figures).  We looked at our own research coupled with the research of organizations much larger and much better at data collection and found that the neighborhood of 287 is much more accurate in terms of meaningful branding and advertising messages.

Marketing and advertising has become a dirty word and I understand why it has gotten a bad wrap as of late. There are a lot of agencies and marketing departments out there that do a terrible job telling the story of their brand.  And when you have a lot of bad stories you have a market full of irrelevant brands and people who have not earned the right to sell you their products and services; simply put, it’s garbage.  This is why the number of 287 ads seen a day is vitally important if you need to get your products and services out to a particular market; you have seconds and fractions of seconds to tell your consumer why it is they should care about you.  Here is how you do it:

People are tired and board of the everyday, the mundane and the expected.  If you don’t stand out you are essentially dead in the water, a sea filled with stalled out, broken-down brands who are surviving for a season.  Whether you like marketing or not, it is not and should not go away. Marketing at its core is simply making a connection with someone and telling them how you can make their life better.  When you leave your brand in the hands of poor storytellers you end up with an ad campaign like JELL-O’s new “Pudding Face” campaign.  If you read what consumers are saying on a wide variety of channels the vast majority are questioning whether or not pudding is good or if when you eat it you have the need to murder people, (it’s that bad).

So here is the secret:  Hire smart people who understand and love your brand to tell your story. It seems too simple right?  But truly it is not.  We are in Portland which houses some of the best tallent in the industry and we love what other agencies are doing.  Of course there is Wieden & Kennedy who always does amazing work that holds the attention of the consumer, (silly example but I would be interested in this milk based on this funny ad campaign: Cats With Thumbs).  They also do a great job telling a story which is full display with Jeep.  You also have agencies like Sockeye who do a great  job with the quality of their work, telling a story and showcasing their tallent, (check out their blog to get a sense of their personality).  Along with a host of other tallent groups of people in Portland, we are proud to tell the stories of the clients we work with because we care about your brand and how your consumer interacts with it.

If you don’t find the right people to tell your story you will never get to where you want to go. 287 ads are seen a day by your consumers, what are you going to do to earn the right to make their lives better?
